Railnews Mobile Site
Following on from redesigning their main site, Railnews approached Digivo again, this time to find out about how best to improve their site for people visiting it on a mobile phone. As part of their digital strategy the board were keen to use some of the increased revenue from the new site as a re-investment to create something bespoke for mobile users, allowing them to reach a larger audience. They needed the mobile site to display much of the same content as the main site and again continue to use the content management system (CMS) they already had in place.
The Digivo team sat with the Board of Railnews and presented a number of options of how to move forward with engaging mobile users. It was decided that a bespoke mobile website was the way forward, being cost effective and more unique than simply optimising the existing site. We then created a template site, using the themes from the existing site but with a much simpler, cleaner layout. To manage the volume of content on the site we implemented a staged loading procedure on searches, meaning that users were not trying to load potentially hundreds of news stories every time they searched, speeding up load times and improving the customer experience. We also ensured the mobile site updated from the same CMS as requested, so that the team at Railnews only had to update a single CMS to populate both sites.
Railnews.co.uk now gets over 10,000 mobile visits a month, accounting for around a third of their total traffic across both of their websites. This allows them to reach an audience which previously were not accessible when they only had a desktop site. In addition this allows Railnews to develop further revenue from new advertising opportunities, as well as bringing news to people on the move, whenever and wherever they are.
"The mobile website has been a great success for us as a business. Again Digivo have delivered as promised. Another great product at a great price."Cyril Bleasdale OBE FCILT, Managing Director, Railnews
